SIMPLE EYE CARE TIPS TO FOLLOW

Taking proper care and maintaining a healthy vision is very important for a healthy life ahead. Overall health can impact eye health.

Some simple tips for maintaining good eyesight are

1) RESTRICT SCREEN TIME

Staring at a computer, tablet or phone screen for too long, may lead to eyestrain, dry eyes, neck and shoulder pain.

A person should take a screen break every 20 mins and follow the 20-20-20 rule. The rule says looking at a thing 20 m away for 20 secs after every 20 mins of screen time.

2) STRETCHING AND RELAXING EYE MUSCLES

  • Stretching shoulders intermittently will help in relaxing the muscles.
  • Sitting on a supportive chair and maintaining a screen at eye level gives relaxation to eyes.
  • Should get up from the chair and take a short walk.
  • Usage of good lighting source. The screen light should be the same as the room light.
  • Usage of anti glare Lenses.
  • The screen should be at eye level maintaining an angle of 25-30 degrees.

3) MAINTAINING GOOD POSTURE

Sitting in correct posture helps in reducing strain on the eyes. Many kids have the habit of watching screen in lying down position which increases strain on eyes.

For doing any kind of office work, the ideal way is to use a table and chair. It helps in maintaining eye health and reduces back, shoulder and neck pain.

4) EAT THE RIGHT FOODS

To maintain good eye sight, plate should be filled with green vegetables, fruits having vitamin C.

These nutrients may help in lowering the chance of developing macular degeneration or cataracts.

5) BLINK MORE OFTEN

We tend to blink less during watching the screen. This leads to improper functioning of the watery layer of eye. Remember to blink consciously

6) PROTECTION FROM SUN

Exposure to sunlight increases the chances of development of macular degeneration or cataracts. To keep eyes safe and healthy, using a decent pair of glasses with UVA and UVB protection is advised.

Be aware of family history if you have any. Very important in case of family members having diabetes or glaucoma. It helps in diagnosis and treatment of patients having eye related problems.

7) THROW AWAY OLD MAKEUP

  • Replace make up products every 3 months to avoid developing an eye infection.
  • Always clean the face before and after using makeup.
  • Applying kajal or soorma is a tradition in India which is an unsafe practice. This blocks the lacrimal glands which gives rise to infection.
  • Use goggles and helmet while driving to avoid dust particles from entering into eyes.
  • Adequate sleep of 7-8 hours is important for the eyes.

Everyone should get eye screening done on a regular basis. This will help in reducing the eye problems if any, early diagnosis and treatment will definitely help in minimising the complications.
